Enabling end-to-end automation through Hyperautomation

Hyperautomation is a term initiated by Gartner in 2019, and they describe it as following:
"Automation uses technology to automate tasks that once required humans.
Hyperautomation deals with the application of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to increasingly automate processes and augment humans. Hyperautomation extends across a range of tools that can automate, but also refers to the sophistication of the automation (i.e., discover, analyze, design, automate, measure, monitor, reassess.)"
In other words, the term refers to combining emerging Automation Technologies to enable end-to-end Automation. These technologies can include Intelligent Business Process Management (iBPM), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Intelligent Document Processing (IDP), Process mining, Test Automation, intelligent Chatbots, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and many more.
Leading-edge companies have already automated repetitive, rule-based processes. However, with new emerging technologies and AI, also more complex operational decision-making can be automated.
Business processes are seldom just clicking and moving data sources between legacy systems, they are way more complex. To automate those processes, more Automation Technologies must be added to your Automation initiative. For example, when handling invoices you can use Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) in combination with Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to handle the whole process. IDP creates structured data from unstructured data, it reads, extracts, and qualifies data from an invoice, and RPA takes that data, analyzes it, and inputs it to a system.
Putting this into a larger context, adding intelligent Business Process Management (iBPM), you automate mapping out a whole process, end-to-end, where you can trigger different Automation Processes (RPA, IDP, Chatbots, etc.) to perform separate tasks depending on the Business Process in whole. iBPM is the skeleton for triggering the events based on customized criteria.
Process Mining is an analytical technology for your organization to get a deep understanding of your current processes. Process Mining has a broad range of use cases. For example, it can be used to identify relevant Process Automation opportunities and optimize current processes, which is fundamental in Hyperautomation. This, in combination with iBPM, is a powerful Automation tool to track and identify the current processes in your organization.
Our recommendation is to start with Process Mining to get an overview of your business processes. To put the processes identified into a larger context, use iBPM. Thereafter, view the processes in detail and apply relevant Automation Technologies such as RPA, IDP, NLP, AI, Test Automation, Chatbots, etc.
So, why is Hyperautomation important?
To start with, understanding your organization's data, and the different processes for handling this data gives you a great foundation on leveraging from even more intelligent analysis and data-driven decision-making on multiple levels.
Gartner even claims that organizations will lower operational costs by 30% by combining Hyperautomation technologies with redesigned operational processes by 2024. This figure is hypothetical, and may not be 100% correct, but the upside of Hyperautomation is beyond doubt.
The processes that Hyperautomation replaces are usually tasks that employees find mundane, repetitive, and sorry to say - boring - and by implementing Hyperautomation, you enable them to focus on more value-adding and fun tasks instead.
When aiming to scale your Automation initiatives, it's very rare that you can do that using just one Automation technology. Combining different technologies enables you to benefit fully from Automation.

A client in the Real Estate industry manages tens and thousands of apartments. Every year the Real Estate company has to ensure that the families living in social apartments are still eligible to do so, gathering information about the number of tenants and their overall income. Hence, the tenants need to fill out a standard survey and provide proof of their income. The survey data is read using Intelligent Document Processing, and analyzed by RPA, determining whether income statements indicate rent control.
One of our clients, a global Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer, automated a process for quality pre-check and order handling using OCR, NLP, and ML. The process extracts data from vendor offers (OCR and NLP) and learns to find the right key elements (ML). RPA is then used to automate checks in SAP, send automated price negotiation requests to suppliers and then create the purchase order in SAP. This automation saved them over 20.000 working hours per year!
One of our clients had the initiative to digitize over 200 000 rules and guidelines, such as standards, manuals, and policies. The standard procedure was for the employees to use their intranet search engine function, however, it was not working as efficiently as expected and returned a multitude of assets that the employees were not looking for. For this process, we did a Hyperautomation project including OCR, RPA, NLP and created an AI Chatbot that returned the requested documents or a suggestion for documents that match the search criteria.
